  In summary, I would very highly recommend Mons Calpe Suite to anyone visiting Gibraltar. If you want excellent food, with views that must surely rival any restaurant in the world, then this is the place for you.

  My family and I came to eat and my boyfriend proposed. The food was completely bland and the portion sizes are more plate than food. The service was awful. I asked for parmesan cheese in an attempt to make the bland food better. It took 10 minutes at which time my food was cold. Considering it is Gibraltar we found it surprising the person answering the phone and the waiters could not speak English. We asked for a manager to be informed there was not one on site and they were understaffed. I believe this restaurant (and the reason for my two stars) is still in business due to its excellent location and views from the top of the rock.

  I tried to get to know this restaurant, but the inefficient service that was provided (as attached image) did not allow me to. I was in Gibraltar and tried to make the reservation 1 day in advance, but they only answered me days later, when my trip was over. How can the service of a restaurant be days without looking at the email used for reservations? Here is the review of the service, therefore.

  As for the food, I ordered a 4 course lunch which consisted of grilled hake, roasted quail, and marinated octopus, and a souflet desert, all of which was phenomenally presented and tasted amazing. I have eaten in some nice restaurants across the world but the standard of food here was definitely up there.

  Visited this establishment on the 30th Dec 17. What a location and extraordinary views. Sadly, this is the only highlight of my experience. Phoned the restaurant a few days earlier to make a reservation, but to my utter dismay and surprise, the person on the other end could not speak a word of English (so much for British Gibraltar). Not a very good start. On the day of the meal, arrived to be sat at an unprepared table even though we arrived about 15 minutes late. No table cloth or salt and pepper containers. Again, the waiting staff could barely speak any English, thus communication was awkward. The waiters found it difficult to expand on the dishes as the menu was in English. The menu itself seems to insinuate fine dining, that it is not, more a confused fusion of cuisines. When the food arrived, (after a long wait), it was more about the colour and size of the plates than the food itself. The portions were meagre, bland and the vegetables semi raw, (I doubt this was a conscious attempt to retain the vitamins). Half way through the meal is when the salt and pepper containers finally landed on our table and it took 10 minutes to get a small vessel with parmesan cheese. After this debacle, I asked to see the manager and it took 5 minutes to be informed that there was no management present in the premises. When I asked who I could make a complaint to, the waiter asked what the nature of my dissatisfaction was. On explaining the dining experience, their reply was that no other diner had complained, that they were short staffed and as a goodwill gesture, we could have a coffee on the house (which I politely declined). On receiving the bill, a 10% discount was given on the main dishes, (the only food we had) but was levied a 10% service charge. M H Bland, please remember the long serving vessel (through trying times for Gibraltar) that carried the Mons Calpe name, for this eaterie has a lot to live up to.

  When each dish arrived we were talked through what the course consisted of, and what flavours to look out for. The attention to detail and small things like this really made this restaurant stand out.

  The restaurant is situated at the top of the rock and is accessible via the cable car, which makes for an exciting start to the day. The sevice inside the restaurant was first class, and we were very well looked after from the moment we entered the restaurant.

  We got seated at a table with panoramic views of Gibraltar and the Spanish coastline, with Morocco also visible in the distance. It is hands down the best dining room I have ever eaten in.
